About this issue and its era: Janet Jackson appears beneath Janet’s Back!, with cover lines on Busta Rhymes, Mia X, SWV, Boyz II Men and Tupac’s final film work. Jackson’s music and performance style had already transformed pop and R&B; this issue arrives in The Velvet Rope era, a period of introspective songwriting and ambitious image-making. It captures the overlap of superstar pop, contemporary R&B and hip-hop media in 1997.
